This is the true story of Matt Laffan, a gutsy Australian whose fierce ‘can do’ spirit and zest for life allowed him to overcome forces beyond his control to achieve extraordinary things.

Tiny in stature but with huge heart, Matt battled severe congenital defects, rolling through most of his life in an electric wheelchair. Raised on the mid north coast of NSW, at eighteen he took the brave decision to relocate to Sydney University and study law. From fresher to house president at St John’s residential college, Matt made his mark – at times clashing with administrators but always championing equal rights.

Intimidated by no one and establishing a stellar career as a public prosecutor and human rights activist, Matt mixed with both the city’s elite and the homeless. His sharp wit was legendary and in court he was a formidable presence, known for his shrewd legal argument and advocacy and for staring down angry judges.

An avid traveller, public speaker and high-profile City of Sydney lord mayoral candidate, Matt tackled every obstacle with intelligence and creativity. His passion and contribution to rugby as alternate chair of the NSW Rugby Union Tribunal earned him the Australian Sports Medal. His life was profiled on the ABC television series Australian Story in 2001 and again in 2009, with unprecedented viewer responses and feedback.

Matt would never contemplate failure. It was not his way. Laffo’s Way celebrates the life and legacy of Matt Laffan – a true Australian hero.
